Q: Do these have any kind of coating? I'm looking for something to make a discharge wand for a Van de Graaff generator and bare metal works best.

I have the assortment. I took the smallest one and dropped it from 9 feet onto concrete 7 times before the seam failed. I can confirm the entire ball is steel & not plastic. It dented a little on drop # 6 but the finish appears to be polished and not a coating.

Q: Can I use these around a fire source, not in contact with flame but would definitely heat up (gas fireplace)?

These being stainless steel of unknown origin and quality, I can tell you that they will certainly get hot and possibly discolor if used near a fireplace. Additionally, since there is air trapped inside with no escape, they might explode if heated/stored too close to a heat source.

Q: How easy would it be to cut these in half?

They might be easy to cut, but I’d be concerned about tearing up the finish on them, as they aren’t actually stainless steel. There is a seam in the middle of them, so I would cut there if I were trying to halve them.

Q: How can I put them on the wall for decoration

The only thing I can fathom is that you could put them on an edged shelf. These are seamless round stainless balls, the largest is just under 18.5” in circumference (around), so I don’t think they are ideally suited to hanging on a wall without possibly ruining them. Maybe displaying them on the edged shelf would work. Or somehow gluing fishing line/ribbon to them and hanging them from the ceiling? I have mine outside in the garden during the summer, and (after cleaning) I move them indoors in the winter onto a really large tray (or bowl). I think it looks cool on the table.
